OD problem with 92 e40d

Trying to get this truck back on the road. i picked it out (had to be blue lol) back in 92 when my dad bought it new. He sold it to my uncle in 2001 and i bought it back to restore the month before my dad passed away.

kind of hard to explain. The truck shifts perfect and goes into every gear fine but when ur on the interstate and it goes into od its fine for the first few seconds and as soon as there is a load on it (going up a small hill) it act like it slips out of no where then jerks and grabs then will do the same thing a few seconds later.. Im not a tranny expert at all but im thinking TC??

i hate e40d's, their the reason i sold my last powerstroke but this truck has a lot of sentimental value and id like to get it to where its drivable before we start doing all the body work on it.

the truck is a 92 f150 4x4 with a 302.

Is the fluid level good? Is the fluid a good color and smell? Have you checked for trouble codes? Are you running stock wheels and tires?

Sounds alot like the torque converter to me also. Like said I'd flush the fluid and see if it helps. If its the torque converter you will probably see some improvement but the problem will come back. Torque converter shudder was a huge problem on the pre 95 E40D's. In 95 they made HUGE improvements in this tranny so if you do a rebuild do it to the latest updated parts.

fluid looks and smells good. od off light doesnt flash or anything. stock size wheels and tires for now. i do know there was a few good updates like u said in the later years of the e40d. the e4od in my last powerstroke has 260,xxx miles on the factory never rebuilt tranny and was just starting to show signs of needing a rebuild.

First thing I'd do is dig the TCC wire out of the harness over the driver side inner fender, add to it so it reaches inside the cab.

Then ground it manually once up to speed to see if it will hold without computer control, input from other sensors causing it to lock/unlock because of false information.

If it won't hold when manually locked you know its in the trans or know to check the solenoid packs connection and or TCC solenoid itself. If no problem found there, solenoid tests good and connections are all solid you know its a trans/TC issue.

If it does hold you know its not a trans/TC issue, its an electronic control issue and know to start with two items listed above (intermittent type issue), then branch out from there until find cause of the problem.
