I called the local Transtar dealer and gave them the part number and they quoted me $686 for it... only $100 less than the Racer X, so I'd rather go Racer X in that case if it comes down to it.

Cool... I thought the difference was closer to $300...for that I'll go racer x too

Well, now my predicament is trickier... The local trans shop here can do a full performance rebuild with a billet triple disc converter and everything for $3,200 with a warranty...

If they rebuilt it with the Racer X parts that I supply, no warranty...

Full built Racer X trans would cost about $3,500 or so before install...

NO WAY I can afford a BTS...

Like DarkStar I've seen alot worse also. But I agree with you, its the reverse screwing with you big time.

How does the Racer X warranty for $3500 compare to the local shop's warranty for $3200, and what is the shop's reputation?

Thanks Mike. That PATC site has good prices on those kits. Might see how much the local shop would charge me to install one of those kits...

I tried to get a shop here to use a kit and tc that I bought for my Ranger and they wouldn't do it. I think it was because the wouldn't be able to justify their outrageous price then. It's the only trans shop around close and they are pretty steep.

The shop here said they could install a kit from somewhere else but wouldn't warranty anything, which is a bummer but I can understand it.

For something that costs as much as an E4OD rebuild, I'd definately want a warranty.

here's a theory.the rebuilt trans with 20k miles didn't receive a new reverse modulator sleeve kit.the reduced line pressure while in reverse,caused your reverse clutches to not want to firmly/fully engage,and that's the metal you see in the pan.
you might be able to have a shop check the trans out,and ask them to see about just addressing these two things.the reverse sleeve kit w/ new clutch pack to restore reverse since the rest of the trans is still low miles.
new fluid of course,and install a filter inline with the cooler.
this is what id try personally w/ a lost reverse of a fresh rebuilt E40D.no way id deem the whole works bad just because reverse died with this low miles.
everything but reverse is working flawlessly right?
just an opinion.good luck.

The local shop I talked to said they would do a full inspection of the trans and would re-use any parts that were in good shape or upgraded already that wouldn't compromise the transmission health. The $3k price they quoted me would be worst case scenario and includes a billet triple disc converter and shift kit.

As far as the inline filter with the cooler, according to BTS it isn't needed and they recommend only running the pan filter. Hard to argue with a company that gives a lifetime warranty on their transmissions...
