Thanks again. Would much prefer doing it without removing the trans and sounds like I can. I do have a cheapy Chiltons but it really doesn't show much. But should be able to figure it out now that I know it's not a press on fit.

Being a 4wd I would suspect the drive gear is in the t'case, right? If so would need to know what model t'case you have I imagine. I can't answer the question for you but, if you read this thread you'll know there are people on here that can answer it. As you can probably already see, there are some people on here that know a lot more than I do. And some have access to parts information not readable available to most of us.

BTW Welcome to FTE.
And please take the time to fill out your profile.

Applications that apply to this scenario: 1977/83 RUG SR-OD / 1984/89 RTS TS-OD.

"Weak sister" RUG SR-OD (Single Rail O/D): 1977/79 Granada / 1978/83 Fairmont/Zephyr & E/F100/150.

"Weak sister" RTS TS-OD (Top Shift O/D) replaced RUG in 1984, used thru 1989 in E/F100/150's.

"Weak Sister" = One speed shift, you can kiss the little darlin' good bye!

Thanks again NumbersDummy. Sorry, didn't mean to call your's a "little" book.
I wasn't aware that it was available on CD, gonna have to check that out. I kind of knew, from reading other post over the time I've been here, that you were probably a Ford parts guy. Just seems like you knew where to find the answers. It's kind of like I used to tell my trainee's years ago when I was a computer tech, It's not that I knew more than some others, it's just that I knew where to look for the answers.

But again, thank you for the help.
From the sound of it I should be able to pick up that snap ring at one of the local tranny (transmission, not the other type tranny ) shops around here should I happen to break mine.
Didn't get to call about the gear today, got tied up helping my dad, but will try again will tomorrow.

So I'll add to this. I currently have a 1985 F350 with T19 case and 4.10 gears. The tirres are 235/85 16. The original tires were 215/85 16. I am changing my gears to 3.54. I don't know what speedo gear came stock with my truck but I would like to be accurate. Is there anyway to figure out what I need to put in? I'll be rebuilding the tranny in about a month so it'll be on my workbench.

When looking up the correct drive (output shaft) and driven (end of the cable) speedo gears in the 1980/89 truck parts catalog, three things must be known.

Axle ratio, trans type and tire size. How many 1980's F350's (or F250's) came with factory installed 215/85/16, 235/85/16 or any other size of P-Metric radial? NONE!

Parts catalog lists tire sizes of: 750-16, 800-16.5, 8-75 x 16.5, 950-16.5's and etc., but not one 215 or 235 anything. So the tires on your truck are not the original type.

If I knew what the 235 tires on your truck cross referenced to the original tire size, then I can give you the info.

But even with this, the speedo will not be 100% accurate, because P-Metrics are a different shape than the original bias ply polyester and non P-Metric radials that were factory installed.

Bill, FWIW, my truck came with LT215/85R16D tires from the factory because that's what the certification sticker says. It is a 1986 F350 crew cab DRW truck.

Trans code on mine is K, axle 49. I realize that this is a C6, 3.55 Ford/Sterling 10.25" non-locking rear but it might get the tooth count for drive/driven gears in the ballpark.
