My price range is 10K, so most of the V10 Excursion's I'm looking at have around 100-140k on them.

Should I check to see if the coil packs have been changed? If they haven't how much are they?

that automatically excludes you from a decent 07+ Expy anyways. I'd rather have the X anyways

why? Joe hit all the points to consider when towing. But for a lighter load, or very infrequent trips, I wouldn't think twice about using an 07+ Expy

I agree with everything Joe discussed above....but! The 5.4 3v, 6 speed trans, and 3.73 gears makes it a pretty decent rig. It obviously isn't an X when it comes to towing, but she ain't no slouch either

The 5.4 3v and V-10 2v are pretty similar power wise. I'd love to see the V-10 2v/3v in person with a 5 or 6 speed trans. I know they exist, but I've never seen 'em. Only the 5.4 variants or a PSD.
2007-2008 5.4 3v has 300 HP/365 TQ
2009-2012 5.4 3v has 310 HP/365 TQ

2005 6.8 2v has 310 HP/425 TQ
2005 5.4 2v has 255 HP/350 TQ
the 07+ Expy also has a true 6 speed trans. The gearing in that puppy is way deeper than those in a 5.4/v-10 X

As stated, V10 X is the way to go for you.

For 10k you should be able to find plenty of good well taken care of V10 X's that can last you a very long time.

Found mine for 10k, 2000 Limited 4x4, 6.8l, bone stock, 100% dry undercarriage, 93k on the clock, spotless interior (normal wear on the driver seat) and a few light scratches. They are out there, just have to hunt a little.

Tylus,

You are correct...in my post I asked "how" the OP would be towing...I agree that for a 7500# TT for local trips the Expy would be a possibility.

However there is more to towing than pure engine power...the auto Mfg's would have you believe that the engine is the only thing that matters...but the wrapper of the truck is just as important...controlling a heavy load connected by a ball teetered feet behind your axle creates a very large lever arm to impart some very large forces...and when moving down the road with a 7500# block behind you...would you rather be in a vehicle that weighs 6700#'s (Expy EL) including tongue weight or a vehicle that weighs 8000#'s + (Ex) including tongue weight...

Thankfully 99% of the time...this doesn't matter...but in those very rare situations...when mass and wheelbase of the TV matters...the Ex will always win...plus the overall towability of the Ex is unmatched in so many ways.

While there are many people towing heavier than 7500#'s with 1/2 ton chassis SUV's...they are marginal for long term use IMO...the "tow rating wars" the Mfg's have going are aimed at convincing people to buy their vehicles based on HP/Trq numbers...but there is so much more than just moving the load...there's controlling and stopping that are important too.

Finally the GVWR's...a 1/2 ton SUV will have a GVWR around 6700#'s and the Ex around 8900#'s...the difference is when you are "at" GVWR...and sadly with the small payloads that all SUV's have...if you are slightly "over"...not that I condone exceeding any ratings...but I feel the Ex is somewhat under rated based on the axles, wheels, tires, brakes and frame whereas I feel the 1/2 ton SUV's are over rated based on those same factors...but the ratings are the ratings...

Your numbers are right on about the HP/Trq and trans info...I too wish that Ford had put another tranny behind the V10 in the Ex...some of those steep, long and high altitude mountain passes would be so much easier with even the 5R110 torqshift...but with the 4R100...I have yet to meet a mountain pass that will stop the V10!

Just my $0.02

Joe.

its a shot in the dark when the coils do go bad. like any other auto part..it could of went bad with low miles or it could last past the 100k+ mark.

this brand i used in the past on my F150 5.4L Harley Truck.
