need help
Okay I was goin down the road and i was at 3000 rpms and let off the gas and I looked down and my speedometer was at 0mph what is wrong please help me out it seems like it only does it when it is cold. I know there is some sensor or something hooked to the rearend that i have heard go out but i dont know where it is at? Any help is appreciated

I think what you are talking about is only in the 92-96 f-series. The pre 92 trucks have a speedo cog located in the T-case which manually meters vehicle speed. I can't imagine what it could be that would cause it to not work when cold. But I don't see it as being that gear. Maybe something is bad in the cluster. Sorry, but thats all I can tell you. The old grease & worn material inside your speedo cable have put so much drag on the gears that they've worn out. Plan on replacing the whole mess: both gears ($8 ea) and the cable ($30?).
...or you could do a speedo swap like I did! You already have the correct rear axle for it. Look at pics #23-25:

It's not an F150 but I once had a Ranger that did that very thing. It ended up being the gear in the transmission that drives the speedo cable. For some stupid reason Ford (Mazda?) decided to make this worm gear out of plastic and of course it wore out. I don't know how you'd change this without taking the tail housing off the transmission. Too much of a PITA so I just didn't fix it and drove sans speedo. The truck had 93000 miles on it for the longest time :-) It was a POS anyway.
