It's for the fuel level indicator circuit.
If his fuel gauge is not working or erratic have him check/clean the harness plug on the frame rail back by the fuel tank. If that doesn't fix it then it's time to chase wires back to the cab along the frame rail. They're relatively easy to find and see.
