Loss of fuel milage and also possible upgrades.

I just bought a 2001 F250 with the 7.3 diesel. My dad had it from new so I know the maintenance was done to it. When he hit around 100,000 miles on the truck the fuel economy went from 16 to 18 to like 13. I have the truck now and trying to figure out what would have affected the fuel economy. Does anyone know?

Also I've been looking at doing some upgrades to the truck as in a cold air intake and possibly a banks power kit. Any suggestions or recommendations?
Thanks

For upgrades I wouldn't consider going Bank's anything unless you like throwing extra bucks out the window when you can get the same if not better results from upgrades we all endorse. Like was mentioned early, Get yourself some new boots, all of them, Clay at RiffRaff Performance Diesel sells them and they are of superior quiality, he's also a supporter here and great guy period to boot, a win win...

These trucks came with a cold air intake from the factory...

Lots of things can affect mileage. 13 mph isn't too far out of range depending on the type of driving. 100% city driving will normally yield 13-15 mph for most drivers. Boost leaks can affect mileage...take a look at your up-pipes for signs of soot. Also look at the insulation on the firewall, if it's black then you probably have an exhaust leak.

Another thing to check is the tubes to the exhaust back pressure sensor. If they are rusted or clogged then that could affect mileage as well. Here is a link to help you with that procedure.

Banks is good, but you pay for more than you get. For the same amount of money you can piece together a better system out of mixed parts.

Boots. 'nuff said.

Boots are a big waste of money if you don't need them

Clay's (Riffraff) boots are a great price and products. You can make a leak detector and check the boots. As previously said, look at the up pipes. I just replaced mine, along with some upgrades, and it made a lot of difference in the MPGs.
