Certification

Could anyone brief me on the key areas a mechanic looks at when he or she is asked to certify a truck?

I inherited this 1997 Ford F-250 Light Duty with 300 000 kms on it and I am wondering if you think it is a lost cause or not. Friends/family think I'm nuts for even considering putting more money into it.

I recently put new balljoints in it, brakes and transmission are new last year.

Needs: (1) a new box ($600.00)

(2) Emergency brake

(3) Exhaust work ($500.00 ++?)

Except for the exhaust work, I can do it all myself (which is quite satisfying) but I'm wondering when "enough is enough".

What do you think?

Only thing you can get here is opinion.
There is an old saying that.....even if something is free it is still is not free.
Some of my thoughts:
What are you going to do with it to make the investment worthwhile?
Total up the rough estimate. Is it more than you feel comfortable spending?
If the box is shot and a lot of rust other places, that would be a big reason to not rebuild the truck.
Be sure your not caught up in the do it yourself thing and not consider all the other items that will keep being a nickel, dime and dollar to death ongoing affair.
Tires, exhaust, brakes, suspension, motor, tires etc will add up.
Be sure your ready to do it and not give up part way through otherwise the outlay is lost before you got much return.
Also remember that when you get the cost approching what the truck is worth you could have bought one in better shape and not have half as much work into it.
Good luck..
