@(&## I know my brake booster is leaking -- looks like fluid has run out over time and peeled the paint away and i thought I've heard a little sucking noise when in the cab. So this problem amounts to a vacuum leak then? How hard was it to change the thing? You did have to replace it right?
If you can hear sucking, it's a substantial leak. It is indeed a vacuum leak. I bought the booster and MC together since mine, like yours was leaking fluid. It's an easy swap, did mine in the rain in about an hour, including bleeding the MC.

If you see signs of a brake fluid leak on the booster you should have also smelt brake fluid being burnt in your exhaust as it is being sucked into the intake systm while the engine is running.

I've noticed that since my diaphragm in the booster has started leaking, the hose has had a bit of brake fluid in it.
Part of my reason for disconnecting it and plugging the ports until it gets a new booster and master.
