I am rebuilding a 94 f-150 Reg cab with an E4OD tranny. The Tranny came out of an extended cab 94 f-150 and rebuilt by a retired FORD Tranny Tech. He installed a kit for towing. I put the truck together and went to drive it and it would not shift through the gears by its self and the timing didnt advance while driving. I could shift it manually throught the gears but would misfire when reved to shift point. also seemed like it didnt shift it gear right away, forward or reverse. I was told to make sure i had the correct NSS or MLSP switch for the computer of the truck. i bought a new switch and installed and now the tranny shift as soon as i move the lever but is lacking the power right away as if the tranny was slipping. I didnt take for a test drive again yet. Any ideas of why this would happen.
The E4OD is a 100% electronic controlled transmission, before going too far by throwing parts at it check for codes. Many times there can be a stored code or an issue with the KOEO tests without turning on a Check Engine Light (CEL).
i have an 96 powerstroke with an e4od tranny. first i had lost the ingnition from startin the truck so i replaced the nuetral safty swith, but that didnt work . so i had to by pass the switch. now im haveing an issue when im driving and when the tranny sifts into 4th gear it duzn't want to shift in to overdrive, but when it deside to it will stay in or it will shift out and stay out. but now it wont come out when it locks in and when i come to a stop and tale off agian i have no power cuz the od is locked in ?? can anyone help me figure this out ?? thank you !
Not an expert but sounds like you have multiple problems. For the erratic shifting you would need to take it to a transmission shop and get it scanned for trouble codes.
For the problem of starting out in OD it would seem like you have lost electrical power to the solenoid block. You would need to check that all your fuses are good. You would also need to check that the big electrical plug on the pass. side of the trans is clean and tight and that the wiring harness is not damaged. With key switch on you should have 12 volts at both red wires at that plug.
Thanks. The problem was with codes in the tranny that needed to be cleared. Also had one bad fuse that wouldnt let me read the codes. Had five codes once cleared tranny is working fine.
i fixed the wiring problem on the tranny but now when it shifts all the way into 4th or overdrive the speedo is bouncing between 35 and 50 when i have my foot on the go pedal and at cruzin, but when i let off the gas pedal the speedo gose to the mph and stays there untill i touch the throtle again and it starts bouncing again any more help ? thank you for yur help
The Neutral safety switch as you call it, or MLPS does a LOT more than just what you think, you can't just by-pass it. Restore its working condition and work from there.

Sounds like you have a bad rear end. You need to put all new bearings in the carrier part of the rear end.
some one else had said the same thing, cuz when i took the old sensore out the cap was bent to one side ? thank you i will look at hte rear end agian and replace the bearings
There is this thing called "excitor ring" in the rear end, it's a toothed, big metal ring. The tranny gets the signal for speed from the VSS sensor, which "counts" the tooth on the ring as they go by to determine the vehicle's speed. Usually if the ring is damaged or broken (which usually only occurs when the ring or pinion fail) the VSS picks the wrong signal, and this can lead to an erratic behaviour from the E4OD.
1996 F350 e4od don't want to take off sort of like slipping but I push throttle down a couple or 3 times then it will take hold and spin the tires on dirt . I've had new filter, and new fluid put in acts like convertor not hooking up to me . Trans not very many miles and it is real clean inside . It shifts great with no slip or problems once it takes holt .
You may have a bad TPS or MAP sensor or both. They kinda of check on each other before the PCM turns up the oil pressure in the transmission.
You need to test them with a meter or scanner or swap them out.
