Axle disasembly

I want to open my rear axle. What is the best way to drain the oil and can I just split the axle or do I have to remove the axles first?
I want to see what condition the axle is in and count the ring and pinion to see what ratio. This is a '51 M-3 split housing spiral bevel rear axle.

I do have a picture in the <a href="http://www.motorhaven.com/">shop manual</a>. I just want to know if I can just open it and not wreak anything.
