The easiest (especially if you're doing this on your back) and quickest option is to buy another rear end with the gear set you want in it. You'll be in it for the cost of the axle, a gear lube change, U-bolts, and a rear d.s. U-joint. You'll also have to bleed your brakes.

I did something similar to this with my 1970 Mustang as a kid, all I did is change the ring
& pinion assembly that bolted onto the axle frame. Changed it from a 2.75 ratio to something
like 3.25 LS.

i just found out that the ford e-250s in the early 90s used a 3.55 gear ratio and also some of them had disc brakes i might go that route the local pull a part says a whole rear end is about 120 bucks with brakes

You'll then have the parking brake to deal with.

I wanted to change my gears, found out it was alot cheaper to buy a whole rear end with the gears than it was just to buy the ring and pinion. I changed from 3.55's to 4.10's. Swapping an auto tranny to a manual will be alot more than just going onto craigslist and buying an axle. I paid 150 bucks for a Sterling 10.25 with 4.10 gears.

The spring perches are going to be located differently as well, about 4" difference between the frame widths.

You would have to weld spring perches on to relocate them is the main thing. I want to say the track width is the same, just the perch location is different.

Your "About Me" profile says you have a 1983 F250. Which rear axle does the truck have?

It could be either an 8.8" or a Dana 60. Better find out first...before you buy any gears for it, because...the parts do not interchange.

If you want to do this on the cheap swap a ZF5 in, if you have a big block or diesel and don't mind getting spendy for adaptors and such, swap to a NV4500 for extra strength. Either way, you won't regret having a 5 speed.

I would swap the rear gear. I always think an auto truck should stay auto, and manual truck should stay manual. It'll be easier to change the gears than anything. How fast do you want to cruise at? Seems to me 3.55 gears are perfect for cruising at 55 mph with no overdrive

If you install rear disc brakes, you'll also have to look into the brake system proportioning
valve that distributes pressure between the front & rear.

BTW I fixed the spelling in the title.
