code reader

a couple weeks ago i bought a innova 3145 code reader followed directions to use it and all i could get it to do was read "000" and the little triangle and square to the right of that, i figured it was a defective part so i sent it back and got another one and it does the same thing. i have tried to pull the codes a couple times and the same thing. can any one tell me what i am doing wrong?

The STI and STO connector pins are probably corroded. Use a small screwdriver and some contact cleaner to clean them up.

ok i will try that once. i pulled the codes with a older style reader that beeps but i hate that one so i got a digital one and cant get it to work. thanks
