Play in gearing box

I put a rebuilt power steering gear box on my 77 4x4 f150. I am curious how far the steering column shaft should turn before it feels resistance in the gear box. I can grab ahold of the steering column shaft with my hand and turn it back and forth before I feel any resistance coming from the gear box. The truck does wonder a bit going down the road. I have adjusted the screw down several times this does help but I do not believe it is as tight as it should be.

Thanks.
