ENGINE UPGRADE

I have a 95 Ranger with ~185k miles and a tired 3.0L. I dont want new truck payments, so I was thinking of putting in a 4.0 if I can find a complete unit with ECM from a trustworthy source. Not having any info on compatibility can you guys tell me if the tranny is interchangeable, and what other recommendations you have, or things to watch out for?

Thanks. All input is appreciated.

There are several items that are not compatible. Transmission, motor mounts, exhaust manifolds, exhaust y-pipes and catalysts, throttle controls, a/c lines from the compressor, radiator hoses, starter, fan, fan clutch shroud, etc. That's why this is not a commonly done swap. It is so much easier to pick up a rebuilt or used 3.0L drop in.

Thanks Joe. I understand the increase in scope and costs, but the 3.0L is just a dog for hp. That's the main reason I was considering a 4.0.

With your input I'm thinking now of getting either a complete unit from a low mileage Ranger out of a junk yard, or buy the whole thing and get what I need then part it out. Might be a fun project for my son and I. Of course, it could be a money pit as well. Hmmm, time for some research.
