i have a 97 F350 with the 460 motor, and the o2 sensor on the converter isnt hooked up. Its screwed into the front converter, and has a wire coming off about 6 inches or so with what looks to be some sort of plug( that has melted a little)....where does this attach to? I cannot find anywhere close as to where this sensor wire would attach to. Any ideas???

And with the o2 sensor not being hooked up, what is it doing to the truck? besides making the ck engine light come on?

 

Your truck will be running in open loop mode with that O2 sensor unhooked. That could lead to an overly rich mixture that can destroy a converter in a very short period of time.

 

How do I find out how to hook it back up or where the other end of the wore is? I have no idea where to look

 

The O2 sensor connection is a 4-wire hookup. It shouldn't be too far away from the O2 sensor location. The cable assembly is bundled with the wires/connectors that go to the MLPS and Solenoid Pack.

I do not have a EVTM manual for a '97 so I cannot verify if the wire colors are the same as the ones listed in my '94 manual. That manual lists the 4 wires as Orange, Gray/Light Blue, Black and Purple/Orange

 

Not really sure where that bundle is located. Where would this wire be running? Near the firewall behind the motor? Somewhere else? If I knew where to start looking I might be able to find it

 

My 02 sensor is ahead of the converter in exhaust pipe and it is 4 wires and goes up towards auto tranny where it is connected with light green connecter and bundled with other wires that goes to tranny.

 

well i have lookied and looked and cannot find the wires that go to this sensor to plug in. The wires coming off the sensor are about 8" long, and there is nothing in the vivinity to reach it. What is MLPS and where is it located?
Sorry for so many questions and stupidity, but i have no idea where to find this set of wires and i would really like to fix it

 

I don't know where they terminate on the other end. Guess somewhere under the hood. Do you have auto tranny? That's where the connector is on my 97 F250. It's just where it joins the wire bundle.

 

yea, mine is an auto too, but i couldnt find anything around it that looked like it went to this sensor

 

How about on top of the trans, if like the 92-96 model the harness runs across the cross member to the MLPS, up to the top of the trans and back to the 4w indicator switch then over it and down to the O2 sensor.

Just buy this truck, if so PO might have cut them off up there so no one would readily see there is a problem after the connector was damaged. Or little off roading might have ripped em out, heavy brush, drove over a old barbwire fence or roll of it left laying out without realizing it was there at the time.

You'll have to go forward and up until you find each of the 4 wires, or get a replacement trans harness from a JY to correct it. It unplugs up on the drivers side inner fender, again if its the same as the 92-96 models, seems likely it would be.

 

its dark now so i cant go and look...but from what i remember looking earlier, the harness comes back and splits on top of the trans. And there is a plug on the drivers side that some of the wires go to...and on the pasengers side it FEELS like the wires go into another plug. I cant see it but can feel it sort of. But out of all of those wires i didnt see 4 loose ones anywhere. Is there supposed to be wires going to both sides of the trans?

Ok there ya go right there, on my 94 and 95 the O2 sensor has a long pigtail, about 20inches. It plugs into the harness on the top of the trans, that plug you feel might/should be it.

Someone at some point probably just installed the wrong O2 sensor, one with to short a pigtail on it to reach the harness connector.

 

ok, so what you are saying is that the o2 sensor plugs in with all those other wires on the passenger side of the trans? There is some sort of heat shield in the way that i can take off to get a better look at it. the wires feel kind of brittle like they got hot or something, so i may try and get one from the junk yard and just redo it. Do you happen to know if the f350 trans is the same as others? Is it hard to swap out?

 

Thanks Dan for helping out. The O2 sensor wiring is tied together with the MLPS and solenoid pack wiring. Remove that heat shield to gain access to the solenoid pack connector. Then remove the connector from the MLPS. Now that cable bundle can be pulled down from around the transmission for a visual inspection.
