question about operating Temp?

hi i have a question.
i have a 2000 expy 4.6 rwd it has 138500miles on it,
i noticed today when i was driving that the engine does not reach operating temperature, it is just slightly above cold, even thou i was driving for 2hours at highway speed.
i was just wondering if this is normal or not?
sorry i forgot to mention that i live in connecticut
thank you

It's not normal and it's also not good for your engine's emission system. Usually this is due to the thermostat being stuck open. Replacing it with a new one will solve the problem. There's also a chance the t-stat is good and the temperature sender for the gauge is no good and is giving a false reading. More likely than not it's the t-stat.

Before screwing with the thermostat, using an IR thermometer to actually MEASURE the temp at the thermostat housing.

A low temp indication on the in-dash gauge can be cause by a faulty thermostat, a faulty CHT sensor, or a bad gauge in the cluster. Since the gauge is driven by data provided to the cluster by the PCM (from the CHT), you can also use either a scan tool or the cluster's dealer test mode to read the data from the sensor or the PCM.

The idea is to actually diagnose the fault instead of just hanging parts on the truck because it sounds good.
