My '99 E350 VAN blew out a spark plug hole in a relatively unreachable spot. I figure on pulling the V-10 with my engine hoist but dont know the potential stumbling blocks associated with this type of pull (i.e. a specialized sling or intake removal associated w it being a van). I plan on installing a "time-sert" type thread repair kit once the engine is out of the vehicle. Also, several exh manifold bolts have rusted away through the years, particularly toward the rear of the engine. While the engine is out I'd like to address this issue as well. Any ideas on how to extract the remainder of them from an alum head. Thanks for any help and/or ideas fellas!
I think you can do it if you disassemble the front end. Headlights, grill, radiator, radiator support, A/C condenser, transmission cooler, hood, bumper, etc.
Hey Big Walton, I disassembled the ENTIRE front end on my van merely to find a bad cylinder and i aborted the whole project and scrapped the van. I was, however, so impressed with the reliability of the 99 E350 (469,000 mi on the motor and 380,000 on the orig. trans)that i bought another. My experience is that the broken portions in the head tend to be loose and easily removed. They just seem to rust through between the head and the exhaust mans but remain in good shape in the threads. Im sure that this is not the case 100% of the time but its worth a shot if you are in love with your bus/van and it is still holding its value and usefullness. If you are not, or it is not, then it may not be worth the incredible pain in the *** that is gaining the access and elbow room to pull it off. just my .02. Ofmanyone
Jeff over in the Modular Engine forums (V-8 & V-10) both your issues are covered especially doing these repairs in frame. In fact there are a few threads running over several pages each with hands on experience with two somewhat common problems.
Browse them first before pulling your entire engine------it'll be easier I assure you!

In an E series? I've read a bunch of threads in the v10 forum and found very little on these it's all trucks. If you happen to know a good one for e series info please share. I tried searching. Thanks!
I might be barking up the wrong tree but you're indeed right about the bulk of posts being about pick ups rather than vans etc etc. My thought was if its doable in-frame it should be at least somewhat as "easy" in either truck.
If there's an advantage to a E series its access at the rear of the engine since we have dog houses. Removing the seats is simple and gives a ton more room.

Yeah, but the pictures I've seen in those good truck threads on exhaust manifold stud breakage show a LOT more room than I see in my E350. Not giving up on the idea yet, I need to climb around in there more yet...
That is one of the more ingenious uses of a two post lift I have yet to see! And considering the little amount of space you get in a van (it's bad enough in the pickups) that might be your best option. It might even be quicker to do that then to pull the engine.
