FTE‘s Favorite, Awesome Two Tone Fords from Mecum Davenport
The weather may have been cold, but these two tone Fords brought the heat to Mecum’s Gone Farmin’ fall extravaganza.
Fords and farming. It’s a winning combination, going way back to the early 20th century, when farmers transformed their Model Ts into work trucks to help move hay bales and caged chickens around town. It wouldn’t be too long before the Blue Oval would step up their game, from building its own line of tractors to help till the fields, then harvest the crops, to introducing heavier trucks to haul the yields off to market.
And speaking of markets, there’s definitely one for awesome two-tone Ford trucks, a handful of which recently rolled down the green carpet at Mecum’s Gone Farmin’ vintage tractor and (for the first time for the Gone Farmin’ brand) truck auction, held on the grounds of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa.
Here’s a Ford that does two-tone in a subtle way. This 1964 F-100 wears a metallic black over metallic gray coat upon its body, which makes the chrome wheels, gas cap, and grill pop. The rear bumper is smoothed out, adding to the overall hot-rod look the truck is going for. This is one truck that’s perfect for cruising down Main Street after a long day on the farm.
Another classic to strut its stuff among those gathered along the green carpet, this 1994 F-150 Eddie Bauer Edition XLT Super Cab looks stunning in green with tan trim with matching bed topper. The one-owner truck is super-clean, too, and may just be too nice to do any hard work beyond pulling a trailer. You also can’t beat the modern (for its day) amenities, from power everything, to cold A/C to beat the heat of the early fall harvests.
Speaking of heat, this 1978 F-250 Custom brought plenty of it against the cold Iowa day outside just by showing up in all of its metallic orange and beige glory. The previous owner spent seven years and over $80,000 restoring this beauty, which includes a 504 cubic-inch V8 to move the chrome “rotary dial” wheels around. This is one truck that will win Best in Show wherever it goes.
The F-250 might have some competition at the local cruise-in, though, in the form of this Colonial White and Starmist Blue 1957 Ranchero. The whitewalls, the wire wheels, the brightwork, the Colonial White interior with blue trim, all of it just screams classy. In short, it’s the perfect rig for a picnic for two near the fishing hole.
Finally, we have the metal embodiment of the classic sherpa trucker jacket: a 1970 F-100 Ranger XLT in blue and white. The tailgate rocks faux wood trim, as do parts of the dash and inner door panels, and the red-white-and-blue XLT logo is too cool for words. The polished chrome trim and wheels complete this true-blue farmer’s dream. Almost makes us want to pull up stakes ourselves.
