Ford’s Transit Custom Nugget Van Transformed into Ideal Camping Rig
Newest Transit conversion van pairs EcoBlue diesel with a kitchenette in the back, pop-up sleeping area on the roof.
The Transit has been the perfect van for many tasks over the years. Some are used as ambulances, others to ferry flowers and catering. A few more have been employed in the trades, while hotels and airports have made the little van a part of their shuttle services. The small footprint of the van, plus its low floor and spacious cargo area are just the right ingredients for whatever purpose you have in mind.
Recently, Germany’s famed camping outfitter Westfalia paired up with Ford to cook up a new take on the Transit for the U.K. market, served with a side of diesel dipping sauce to boot: the Transit Custom Nugget.
“More and more customers are recognising the freedom and fun that campervans can offer,” said Ford of Europe’s commercial vehicles chief, Hans Schep, “and we’re excited to be able to offer a greater number of adventure-seekers our Transit Custom Nugget, which is already much-loved in Germany. Transit Custom’s comfortable cabin, advanced driver assistance technologies like SYNC 3, and fuel-efficient 2.0‑litre EcoBlue engine make it the perfect platform for the Nugget camper.”
The inside of the Transit Custom Nugget isn’t filled with delicious chicken, but you can cook some chicken nuggets up in the L-shaped kitchenette, thanks to the double-burner gas stove. There’s also a sink to wash your hands after handling the raw chicken, and a refrigerator to keep your chicken fresh.
On the other side of the kitchenette, up to five people can enjoy those chicken nuggets at the fold-out table, with a bench for three, and seating for two thanks to the swiveling driver and front passenger seats. There’s room for four to sleep inside, with two near the ground, and two more in the pop-up tent on the roof. The fifth will have to make do in their own tent outside, alas, but at least they’ll be first to use the outdoor shower mounted at the rear in the morning.
Under the hood of the Transit Custom Nugget is a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel, which can deliver between 133 and 182 horses to the front via either a six-speed manual or SelectShift automatic. An eight-inch touchscreen with SYNC 3 keeps one and all connected with the outside world while on the move, and driving tech like cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and a wide-angle rear view camera make sure the crew arrive home safe and sound.
Potential Transit Custom Nugget owners can view the new camper at Ford’s display during the Motorhome and Caravan Show, scheduled for October 15-20 at the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham, England.
Pricing for the U.K. market has not yet been announced , though Euro-market models, which were introduced earlier this year, can be had for around $60,000 to $67,000, according to New Atlas.
