Ford F-150 Smoke Show with Huge Rollers: Tire Smokin’ Tuesday

By -

Ford F-150 with tires that extend way out past the body uses V8 power to roasts the rear rubber.

When a modern Ford F-150 enters a burnout competition, the driver will often install smaller rear wheels and tires to improve the chances of success. Small wheels weigh less, thus taking less effort to spin, while smaller tires effectively increase the final drive ratio, also helping to get the tires spinning. This week’s Tire Smokin’ Tuesday video comes to us from the Rough Gliders YouTube channel and it features a new F-150 that has taken a different approach, rolling into the competition with huge wheels and wide tires.

High Riding F-150

There are no details on this Ford F-150, but we can tell from the styling that it is from the current generation and based on the sound, it is powered by the 5.0-liter V8. In stock form, that mill delivers 385 horsepower and 387 lb-ft of torque, but we don’t know whether it is stock or modified.

What we do know is that this F-150 is wear a ginormous set of wheels wrapped in wide, low profile rubber. These tires are considerably wider than the stock tires that would have come from the factory, and this wheel-and-tire combination is surely heavier than the stock setup. With that in mind, this F-150 may have some extra horsepower via an engine tune or something, but in any case, it has the powered needed to roast the hell out of these big tires.

Also, while this doesn’t have any impact on burnout capabilities, this F-150 appears to be lifted a bit, making room for the big rollers.

Burnout Competition

The burnout action begins immediately as the video starts, with the huge rear tires spinning easily on the wet, smooth concrete pad of the Trinity Auto Meet Season Opener 2019 at Flamboro Speedway in Canada. Within a few seconds, smoke begins to pour off of the rear tires and before long, we can no longer see the rear half of this high-riding F-150.

After a minute or so, the driver lets off, ending the burnout and rolling out of the way, giving us a good look at the side and design of the wheels. We don’t know how this F-150 did in the burnout competition, but for a truck with this wheel-and-tire setup, it put on an incredible smoke show.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
