F-150 engines

When selecting a new pickup, choosing the right engine is key. We summarize for you all the 2023 Ford F-150 engines to help you decide.

The Ford F-150 model range is extensive. You can buy anything from a simple work truck to a luxury cruiser to desert running monster. To offer such a diverse lineup you need a diverse range of engines to match. Ford of course has this and the list of F-150 engines is sizable and can be a bit confusing. More power is never a bad thing but with high gas prices you probably don’t want to buy more than you need. On the other hand, you need an engine that will do the work you expect. Otherwise, what is the point of buying a truck in the first place?

To help make things a bit clearer for you we are offing you this guide to 2023 Ford F-150 engines. We will cover the key engines, specs, and the models in which they are offered. Some of you may just say give me the 5.0L V8 and be done with it. And we can certainly appreciate that approach. But there are other compelling engine options out there that you may want to consider. After all, the engine you chose will determine the entire personality and usefulness of your truck. You won’t want to take the decision lightly.

3.3L TI-VCT V6

3.3L

It all starts here. This is the base engine that you get in the XL and XLT model F-150 trucks. This naturally aspirated V6 produces 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. It has an EPA rating of 19 city, 24 highway and 21 combined on a 2WD truck. The numbers drop to 19/22/20 if you opt for 4WD. The engine is equipped with twin independent variable camshaft timing to help optimize power. This engine is also flex fuel capable and will run on E85. It is a solid performer and will get the job done for you in most situations. But there is nothing here that makes it truly standout.

2.7L EcoBoost V6

F-150 engines

This engine is standard on the Lariat model. It can be optioned on the XL, and XLT models. Although a smaller displacement than the 3.3L list above this unit pumps out 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. A big reason for this bump in power is the twin intercooled turbochargers that come with this engine. And it is small but mighty. The upper block and cylinders are made of the same high-strength compacted graphite iron used in the much loved 6.7L Power Stroke found in the Super Duty trucks. It has an EPA rating of 20 city, 26 highway and 22 combined on a 2WD truck. The numbers drop to 19/24/21 if you opt for 4WD. So, it is more powerful and more efficient than the base 3.3L. This engine is certainly a worthwhile upgrade.

5.0L TI-VCT V8

5.0

Now we are rolling in the 5.0. 400 horsepower, 410 pound-feet of torque combined with that classic V8 rumble. This engine might not be the most powerful option, but it is the favorite of many. This is your standard engine in both the King Ranch and Platinum model. You can option this in the XL, XLT and Lariat trims. This engine is also flex fuel capable and will run on E85. On regular gas it has an EPA rating of 17 city, 24 highway and 20 combined on a 2WD truck. The numbers drop to 16/22/19 if you opt for 4WD. So, your fuel economy does suffer compared to the previous options. But come on, you gotta love a truck with a V8. And this is the most powerful option so far.

3.5L EcoBoost V6

3.5L

This engine may be ‘only’ a V6, but it is twin turbocharged and cranks out 400 horsepower and a stout 500 pound-feet of torque. Properly equipped this engine is capable of towing up to 14,000 pounds. To have this engine available as an option you need to step up to the Lariat model. It is also an option on the King Ranch and the Platinum.

The Tremor and Limited models had this engine as standard in 2022 but for 2023 the Tremor is expected to have the 5.0 as standard with this 3.5L as an option. The Limited is dropping this engine for 2023 and will offer only the 3.5L PowerBoost. This EcoBoost 3.5L has an EPA rating of 18 city, 24 highway and 20 combined on a 2WD truck. The numbers drop to 18/23/20 if you opt for 4WD. Thanks to the beefy tires and off-road gear the Tremor is rated at 16/20/18. Mileage might not be great, but this is a powerhouse of an engine.

High Output 3.5L EcoBoost V6

F-150 Raptor engine

High Output makes all the difference here. This engine is reserved exclusively for the Raptor model. It is the only engine available in the Raptor and it is not an option on any other F-150. It you want this engine; you buy a Raptor. Period. This engine produces 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. You are buying a Raptor so do you really care about gas mileage? If you do you will find it is rated at 14 city, 16 highway and 15 combined. If those numbers bother, you then skip the 37-inch tire option, and the rating improves to 15/18/16.

3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6

Powerboost

If the EPA numbers for the High Output V6 frighten you then the PowerBoost might make you feel better. This is one of the most advanced Ford F-150 engines available. It produces 430 horsepower and a whopping 570 pound-feet of torque. Properly configured it can tow 12,700 pounds. It combines that grunt with EPA friendly numbers. It is rated at 25/25/15 in 2WD configurations and 23/23/23 for 4WD configurations. To get this engine you must step all the way up to the King Ranch model. And even on that truck it is a pricey option. You will be spending well over $60K to get this engine. It is also optional on the Platinum and standard on Limited models. The power and fuel economy are nice, but Ford will collect serious money from you in exchange for it.

5.2L Supercharged V8

F-150 engines

The big daddy of them all. This beast of an engine was lifted from the Shelby GT500 for use in the 2023 Raptor R. The Raptor R is the only truck where you will find this engine. It cranks out a massive 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. But this engine is not designed for towing and payload. This engine is meant to haul ass. Across the desert. It is not yet rated by the EPA but do you care? Expect close to single digit fuel economy out of this thing. But you will be behind the wheel of the most powerful F-150 Raptor ever.

There you have it. The full lineup of 2023 F-150 engines. Choose wisely.
