Thoughts on blind online auction purchase of 6.4L with 300,000 miles for $7500? (pics)
Pretty nervous about this large purchase sight unseen...blind bidding...with only 2 pictures to go off of....This was sold at a dealer auction from a large Chevy dealership...in the south.
IT HAS 300,000 MILES on the 6.4L diesel motor.
Starting bid was $6000...I was the high bidder at $6700....I have $300 in auction fees ($7000) and an additional $500 to ship to Michigan ($7500 total delivered).
2008 Ford F250 XL
300K Miles
6.4L diesel
Crew Cab 8 foot bed 4x4
Only 2 pics to go off of so for all I know the interior is in rough shape...The way I look at it...if it runs/drives and is halfway clean...Will hopefully get $10,000....If it has major engine problems...Will hopefully get $6000.
I am going 3-ways between myself, dad, and brother so profits will be divided by 3 and same with any loss.
I will update results of this truck roulette when I actually get the truck...Might be a little while with shipping...For now, just nervous...I never spend this kind of money on a single car...

I ran the carfax and there were 2 owners...
1st owner has lots of records...probably well maintained by him...
0-216,000 miles...Driven all over the place...Texas, Cali, Alabama..Florida...But mostly in Texas.
2nd owner put 85,000 miles on it in 4 years...Looks like it was in California for an oil change at 299K miles in September of this year and back in Texas this month...
The first owner is listed as commercial...
You have to do a lot of detective work to try to figure out if it is in ok shape...I see on the carfax the windshield was repaired 2 years ago...with over 250,000 miles on truck...
If you go to that extent to maintain your truck (I personally would not care about a chip or crack in the windshield) then hopefully it is a sign that the interior is in good shape...
I requested additional pictures from the auction facility and I should get them on Monday...

Well it looks pretty good. I like that color. Got to love southern sheet metal. Our weather kills vehicles from the top down because of the sun, and yours kills them from the bottom up from rust.
Except I am not wild about the style of headache rack or bars on the bed rail but those are easy enough to remove. The way they are positioned looks like it had a cross bed toolbox on it, and the bars and rack would keep it from sliding around so that is a plus. I am always surprised at how many people set those toolboxes on there with no bolts or clamps or anything.
I hope it turns out OK for you, I have read a lot of threads on here about buying "sight unseen" across the internet that did not turn out well.

Because in June 2016 it passed a safety inspection in New Waverly, TX and probably had very close to 300K on it at this point. What does the safety inspection entail?

Would a truck with a blown motor or something major mechanically wrong with it pass Texas inspection?

I wouldn't have done it. That's a few miles on any truck, let alone a 6.4 with the reputation of "if it breaks, it's expensive. "
Still, in Michigan there are lots of posers looking for a truck with no rust and something they can put a stack on. You probably won't have any issues unloading it.

Man, good luck. That's a hell of a gamble. I wouldn't have done it, probably not even if I could have seen it in person and driven it around. That's a metric crap-ton of miles on what I assume (carfax) is an original driveline and suspension?
Sounds like you're wanting to "flip it" and just resell it? I have my doubts. If it was in super nice shape, I doubt the dealer would have sent it to auction. My opinion, but usually the ones sent to auction have "issues" (could be that this one's issues are just the total # of miles).
Hope it works out for you.
