Had a clicking noise coming from the rear of the 03' Explorer. It turns out the crappy brake shoes that go inside the emergency brake drum came apart and were bouncing around inside the rotor. The e-brake held decent but the pads just came apart. They are held together minimally. Just a heads up for someone if they hear a weird noise.
Wish I would have known that a week ago! When I stopped by the shop the mechanic was still putting the car back together so I got to watch. I noticed the parking brake shoes we missing. I asked about it and he said not to use the parking brake or have the shoes replaced. Since we never use the parking brake anyway I'm not too concerned, but I bet the break lining has been bouncing around in there for a couple of years.
