The plastic drive gear on the cable should fit well into the hole on the transmission. I'd look in the transmission to verify that you have a worm gear on the transmission shaft. New plastic drive gears are available in junk yards and off ebay. Sometimes the plastic drive gear will not seat in the mount in the transmission. Sometimes the little extenshion on the previous gear is still in there. Get a mirror and flashlight and check it out.
