It's part of the latch assembly in the door. Just spray lots of WD40 around there (or preferably electrical contact cleaner if you have it), and wipe all the gunk away and you should be fine. You may want to work the latches a few times as you do this to ensure they are moving correctly.

Shouldn't need to remove the latch.
