Found this regarding the State Of Washington's emissions testing requirements:

Diesel Vehicles

All diesel vehicles get an exhaust smoke test

Diesel vehicles under 8501 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) with two-wheel or part-time four wheel drive

These vehicles are tested on a dynamometer. All front wheel drive vehicles will be operated by test station personnel. You may operate a rear wheel drive vehicle on the dynamometer.

Diesel vehicles under 8501 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) with constant 4x4 (all wheel drive) or traction control and diesel vehicles over 8500 (GVWR)

These vehicles get a snap acceleration test. The vehicle will not be driven on a dynamometer. You will be asked to fully press down quickly the accelerator and immediately release it, several times, while the transmission is in park or neutral.

Washington Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program - FAQ

Doesn't say anything about equipment, but it would probably be a good idea to look into it.
