I started putting back the transmission today but have an overdrive ordered and found the cause of my leak...

Sounds like a productive day.. I have thought about an overdrive for the truck..

This will knock my revs down by 1000 rpm at 60 mph

That will be good.. should get better gas mileage.. is this an add on after the transmission???

No I'm changing out the transmission completely..

Transmissions are getting to be more complicated with 8 and 10 speed..

This is just a simple 4 speed. I'd hate to think what one of the new ones would cost plus the headaches of all the electronics..

I have a C-6 3 speed and switching over to the AOD..

Will make the difference I need, I might still do some work to the rear differential by putting a limited slip carrier in it but will likely keep the 3.73 gearing. Will know more once the transmission is changed..
