spark plug gap for 1985 f250 460 engine
 

hi guys thanks for your help just got truck and don't have a manual yet can you tell me spark plug gap for a 460 engine thanks again

Under the hood to the left of the hood release lever, there should be a square/rectangular sticker that lists emissions info. It should list your plug gap there. For example, for my 81's 302, it says that a gap size from .042 to .046 is the proper gap size.

I personally would recommend using Motorcraft plugs, they're cheap but they work very well and I've never had a problem with them. :)

I'mgetting ready to changing myspark plugs and have been getting differnet info on the gap size.
The auto parts store said. 044 but the emissions sticker on my valve cover says.032-.036
For all I know thesticker on the valve cover could be from another truck at some point
The sticker also says it was manufactured in November 1973 but the truck is a1974.
Now I'm confused as I read that the gap size changed in 73/74 for the 360 .
Any help would be great I'm not a car expert .

I would go by the valve cover spec. You do know the 1974 vehicles were usually available for sale in the fall of 1973? That's the way it always was, except a few oddballs like the 64 1/2 mustangs. I think they were introduced in the spring of the year?

I did some more research and it says the 360 was changed from points to electric ignition in1974.
I'll just pop open the distributor cap and look and see what which I have.
Chances are that someone could have also changed it from points to electric at some pout too.

If you have electronic, you will have a box mounted on the fender with wires going from it to the dist.

Plug gaps are just like tires, they are a compromise between performance and plug life, just like tires are a compromise between traction(being softer) versus tread life(harder rubber).

The wider gap will raise the voltage available at the plug, producing a larger spark. But this means the ignition system has to be in top shape, and the plugs can't wear much or the gap will get too big and it will miss-fire. Too small a gap, and your spark will be small, but the plugs and the rest of the ignition will have a long easy life, even though your engine will not perform as well. So the gap is a compromise between the life of the plug and the performance of the engine. The electronic ignition has more oomph behind it, so it can stand a little bit wider gap than the old points style ignition.
