Help with F-250 Radio Removal
 

I have a 2005 Diesel powered F-250 with the Lariat interior package and I want to install Sirius Radio in the truck. I need to obtain access to the back of the existing radio to plug in the cables from the Sirius radio. I found this site which was to give me the instructions on the removal of the radio.

They make it sound so easy. However, they don't bother to mention that the steering wheel is in the way and prevents the snap-out trim panel from being removed!

What I would like to find are detailed instructions on the removal of the trim panel and then how to remove the radio. I would like to know the location of each hidden, recessed fastner and if they are Phillps head, Torex head or mertic socket head fasteners. Also any items that must be removed BEFORE the trim panel can be removed for radio access. Thanks.

You can go to a parts store to get the removal tools or make due with some nails or coat hanger wire. They are just a u shaped hook. If you look on either side of the radio, one at top, and one at bottom, making total of 4 holes. Slide you tool in those and push to the outsides, which should release the spring tabs holding the radio in. Once you have done it once it only takes seconds.
After the radio is out, and if you still need to get the dash apart, there are a few Phillips screws just above where the radio sat. You will have to look up into there to see them. Once those are out, the panel will just pull off. There are only spring clips that hold it on, around ten or so.

I think you are going to be hard pressed to find out all of the specific information you are looking for on each fastener location, torx head, phillips head, etc.

Attached is a link from Brandmotion that provides some pretty good info for the 2006 - 2007 models. I suspect the 2005 will be the same.

If you don't find the information you are looking for take your vehicle to a local audio shop and they can probably install it in a few minutes for a minimal fee. After I bought the Brandmotion iPod adapter I decided it wasn't worth the effort to install it myself. I took it to an audio shop and they installed it in less than 15 minutes. It would have taken me that long to figure out how to get started.

The '05 and later don't use that method.


This link from Greg should tell you everything you need to know. But the key bits of info you seemed to be missing is that you need to pull the gearshift lever all the way down to low, and lower the steering wheel tilt all the way down. The trim will then pull all the way out. Radio is just screwed in place.

With the links and suggestions, I was able to get the factory radio out and the plugs installed for the Sirius Radio. (And the Sirius Radio does work!)

The one set of instructions I followed, just said to unplug the electrical connectors from the trim panel and there was no worry about reconnecting them as each one was different and they couldn't be connected wrong. The one very important bit of information they didn't bother to tell you was that each electrical connector has a lock on it to keep it in place. Trying to find these "locks" and then depress them while pulling on the connector was sure NOT a trivial process. After spending almost an hour disconnecting three plugs, I just decided to pull the trim panel out as far as it would go with the electrical connectors still attached. Luckily I had JUST enough room to sneek the radio out and add the connectors for the Sirius Radio. I guess nothing is very easy.
