Bleeding Injection System
Looking for any tips to help save the poor old starter when I purge the air out after new injectors and pump. Thanks

Did you replace the fuel filter......... always do that after an injection pump change, Fill the filter with fuel or one of the fuel additives, PS white/silver, Stanadyne etc or new diesel fuel. Bleed the filter header by the Schrader valve. Open the injector lines1/2 turn from closed.
Using the starter on 15 -20 second intervals with a 2 minute cool down, close 2-4opposing injection lines at a time. It should start if you cycle the GPs after the last 4. |
If you fill the filter, and leave the injection lines loose, when you start purging the air, hold the throttle wide open.
The air will be gone faster than you think. Just remember, 20 seconds max cranking, 2 minutes cool down before cranking again. I actually don't crank mine 20 seconds, more like 10 to 15. You should have fuel at the injectors before the second cranking session is over. |
Thanks for the sound advise guys. Not sure where the fuel filter stands now for rotation. If it's still good [I replace it every other oil change 6-7 K] would pulling it and adding some additive be adequate or is the filter part of the process? I normally prime it with some of the diesel from the old filter and then top it off with trans fluid.
Also, FYI the CDR will not go sixteen years without service.:-innocent Funny thing is I don't recall the service for it in the manual and the fellow at Ford never heard of it and traced it back as an International part number. It was a two day part so I called International thinking it would be in stock as they are high volume and heavy truck and again they never heard of it. Even with the part number he asked where it was located and what it looked like, heard him telling someone about the large tuna can on the valve cover. Always learning.. |
To make it real easy on your starter, Install an electric fuel pump. Ebay has them for about 45 bucks. Just cut about 6" out of the fuel line between the fuel pump and filter. Wire it so you can turn it on at will. Whenever you run out of fuel, you can prime the system by simply turning it on. Let it run for 1 hour and it will purge all of the air out of your system. Cheap at twice the price!

To be a purist, pour the fuel into the holes surounding the threaded outlet. That way you are not leting unfiltered fuel get to the IP.

Forgot to ask, can/should the IP be primed?

You can pull the top off and fill it up, but then you have to be worried about getting it back on correctly so you don't wind up with a run away engine.
Not worth the extra work in my book. Loosen 4 or 5 injection lines, fill the filter with fuel or Diesel Kleen and two cranking sessions it should be running. |
