How to change a fuel filter??
 

Sorry if this has been posted before but I couldnt find anything. My truck is well due for a new fuel filter. I bought the truck with 51000 miles and now has 96000. I have never changed it and dont know if the previous owner has either. I highly doubt it was changed but might be wrong cause the truck was well taken care of. The truck gets 13-14 mpg and when I had stock tires on it I was getting 18 but this past winter with the stock tires I was still getting 13-14. So that leads me to believe its probably pretty nasty. Anyways I have never changed a fuel filter on any of my vehicles before. So Im just looking for tips on how to change it, what Im looking for and that kinda stuff. Any help would be great help. Thanks. Im hoping to get to this some time soon but figured I would post this to give me an idea a head of time. Also is there any brand of fuel filter better than others?

Should be changed every 15k miles. If you don't want to depressurize the fuel pump then change on empty tank (that's what I do). Get saftey glasses and change in to old clothes as gas will run down your arm or drip on you. You will need a fuel line tool which you insert in to the clip to unlock. Filter should have an arrow pointing from tank to engine. I always have to wrestle with the tool to unlook it. Once installed, turn key on/off a few times to prime (fill filter and line with fuel) before starting.

X2 Everything goracer said. I changed mine last week with 19k on the ticker and oh man was it ever filthy.. I just let mine sit overnight, i didnt depressurize or anything. It was cake and only leaked about an once of gas. Just wear some safetly glasses when you do it and have some rags handy to catch the gas drips.

let it sit during the night, first thing in the morning or b4 u drive it, take it off. Ampro t70045 tool. Unhook the connectors, (it has orange clips that holds them in) then put that tool in and push them together then away. I took the back one off first. Mine was out and in in about 15 mins.

I usually go 30K, but then mine aren't very dirty when removed? Maybe my luck is just better at gas pumps with clean tanks and filters.

They aren't expensive, 15K or once a year ain't gonna break a bank, and much much better than waiting 60-90K.

Good for the fuel pump pushing fuel through a filter to meet the regulater's demand up front. Dirty / clogged filter works a pump harder.
