I have a 71 f100 4x4 with a 360 ci in it. I took out the stock wiring harness and put in a painless wiring harness. I was wondering if anyone could send me or tell me where I could locate a wiring diagram for my truck.I am finding things hard to locate on the stock harness .Also where the voltage reducer is located so I can add it to the painless harness. Thanks MrB.

I have the diagrams for a 71 (I think) what do you have a question about as the diagrams are quite large. As far as a voltage reducer
in a 71 I think a 71 has a instrument voltage regulator is this what you are talking about? They are on the back of the instrument panel.

It is a red/green striped wire, probably looks like a black stripe though, that every few inches says "resistor wire" if my memory serves me right, but it also could be "resistance wire". Darn memory loss :)
It runs from the ignition switch to a splice located just inside the firewall above the drivers left knee. Where it joins a brown wire from the ignition relay and another red/green wire to the coil +

I think i figured out the voltage reducer you are talking about. Is it the resistor wire for the coil? This is located in the wireing hareness.Look at the coil.I think it will have two wires on the + side one will go to the I terminal on the starter relay. The other will go to the ign switch. This is the resistor wire.If you are going to reuse the resistor wire it has to be stretched out not coiled up or doubled back on itself. As it will get to hot.

Chrysler used a resistor module that could possibly be used. They were mounted on the firewall of 60-70's chrysler products. My books listed the value of the Chrysler unit as 0.5 to 0.6 ohms, two of these units in series (end to end) would produce 1.0 to 1.2 ohms. According to my books the value of the resistance wire for Ford is 1.3 to 1.4 ohms. This is probably close enough to work just fine.

When you wire connections to the ballast resistors use high temperature wire connectors and good wire. You can get these connectors at appliance repair dealers. They use them where they connect to heater elements etc. They are cheap, often they will give you a few.

Just an alternative...

The speed resistor.

It attaches to the plenum.
