longest time between oil change?
my 99 psd is due. has 7000 miles since its last change and every weekend when i plan to do it (bang) something pops up. its 4.30 on a sunday and i'm not in the mood to do it at all right now so instead i'd figure i'd just sit on my couch with my laptop, stay clean and talk about it.

Well Brian, your at the right place to just kick it back. Now on to the oil change. Because of my busy life i run synthetic so i don't have to change so often, maybe you should do the same. I change mine at 10,000 give or take if towing. 5,000 for regular dino. Others will chime in soon with their thoughts.

Brian,
Due to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts new environmental regulations, it is now illegal to change your oil if it does not have less than 7500 miles on it...so sit back, pop a cold one, and relax. You might as well enjoy yourself :-headbang. PS...I escaped :-X05 Massachusetts at the age of 2...but because I am a tree-hugger I pay strict attention to the cutting-edge developments within the commonwealth (is this another word for socialist?). God bless Ted Kennedy! |
Is 5K the max you should run on dino oil? I'm pushing 5K miles since I bought my truck already and was hoping to stretch it out to 6K before I change the oil.
For those running synth, do you pay for oil analysis or just figure on a 10K minimum between changes? As much as it's going to cost to change the oil in this beast, doing it as little as possible sounds real good to me. BTW, what is the oil capacity? I've heard either 13 or 15 quarts. |
I put about 15-16 quarts in but I pump out the HPOP and have a bypass filter. I run dyno in my 97 and at 7k it was still good on the oil analysis, as for that I used the oil analysis to set my usage distance, so I tested 5k 7k 9k 11k. I was still good at 11 ( on royal purple 15/40) so now I do an analysis at 10, if it says go a couple more I do and then change it. I like to have one to two test per oil change to ensure I don't have a leaky injector o ring or some other stupid little failure that could cause the whole engine to blow up just so I can save 20 bucks.

Hey Chase, i never ran any oil analysis on my synthetic oil. It would prolly be a good idea but never did. I change it at 10,000 because of extended oil change data that says you can run them alot longer than that but i feel safe doing what i,m doing. As for dino oil, if i was to run that, 5000 mile interval. I change my oil faithfully without question. 15 quarts is your capacity.

Thanks Bryan and Mike.
So now a few more questions... bypass oil filtration. As I understand, running a bypass filter allows for better filtration and extended oil change intervals. What is the cost of a bypass kit, how hard is the install, and is it worth the trouble or not in the end? |
As for bypass filtration, alot of guys run them, i personally don't. It can't hurt to have more filtration. Others that have the system will help you with the install if you go for it.
|
I dont see why you can run the oil a few thousand or so more than what everyone says. It's not like it is going to start acting up a few hundred miles past the oil change... However on a HEUI engine like ours, the new oil tends to quiet the injection system and make it start faster.

I usually change mine every fall whether it needs it or not.:-hair
It usually has 4-5,000 miles on it by then and I like fresh dino for the winter. I check the stick all the time to see how dark its getting and have been known to actually change it twice one year as two many short trips will contaminate it more quickly I think. :-huh |
Pony Power, where in WA are you at? I lived there for a year before getting exiled to Oregon but might be coming back in the fall sometime.
|
click here for the link to my setup. I copied those before me, the pics are of my 97 and the measurements, but I did my excursion and just a couple of things were different, and it was not enought to warrant a new write up. I would do a lot of research before I purchased a bypass filter, there are some very knowledgeble guys on the subject, and do a search there is a ton of stuff out there. I have PMS (powerstroke modification syndrome) so you are asking the wrong guy if it is worth it or not, but I would put it behind some of the more fun mods.
