97 F150 no start just a single click
Hello to all,
I have a question about my 1997 F 150 that will not start. When you turn the key all you hear is a single click. Then if you wait a while, try a few times more, sometimes all of a sudden it starts. Any sugestions? I replaced the selenoid on the starter about 3 months ago, and I am now woundering if it may be the relay, mounted on the passengers fender, or if I should just replace the starter and selenoid together. Thanks in advance. |
my truck was doing the exact same thing and the cause was a bad starter motor. once i replaced it, the truck starts up with no problems at all. also make sure your battery is good and fully charged.

My guess is the fender mounted solenoid, cheap guess and easy to get to. Most times one click per turn of the key is solenoid..multiple clicks per turn of the key is insufficent (sp) voltage to the starter or a bad starter.

i didnt think these trucks had the remote(fender mounted) solenoid some one correct me if im wrong. i believe the solenoid is located on the starter assy.
There is a starter relay on the fender well and a starter solenoid on the starter. :-wink
ah, thanks. i didnt know that.
Your problem is the main red thick wire the end piece that connects to the starter is shot REPLACE it and watch the results.
I am also betting you have a bad connection, either the ends are dirty or a cable is bad.
Clean all battery terminal connections and starter connections. It sounds simple but less resistance equals more amps.
yeah id replace starter. happened to me

Galaxy, archer, and mrsteveo all have good advice that you would do well to check out on your truck before replacing the starter. Good luck! :-wink
