What is a 1998 F150 (with trailer packager) 4.6l V8 towing and payload capacity?

Does anyone know any good links to get the full specs? I am thinking of buying one. Is a 99 or 2000 a better idea?

This is my first truck and I don't plan on hauling much - just occasionally pulling my boat with a camper. Can it handles this?

97 info, 98 probably the same. 4.6L automatic w/towing package included 3.55 rear end, towing was 7000 lbs. for 4X2 SuperCab, 7200 for Regular Cab. A 4X4 knocks 400 lbs. off of towing capacity on both cabs. A manual trans cuts towing at least in half.

Payloads from 1700 to 1965 lbs. depending on what cab, what bed length. Regular cab had some optional payload packages that went over 2000 lbs, don't know how common those are, maybe not very.

If you have a particular configuration in mind, I can look it up.

Where can I get the following info?
I would like to know GCWR, GVWR, payload,towing and Axle ratings for each one:

1. 1998 F150 XLT Supercab Shortbox 4.6L V8 4x4 (gears=? regular most common ratio probably?)
2. 2000 F150 XLT Supercab Shortbox 4.6L V8 4x4 3:55 gears
3. 1998 F250 XLT Supercab Shortbox 5.4L V8 4x4 (gears = ?)
4. 1999 F250 XLT Supercab Shortbox 5.4L V8 4x4 (gears = ?)

- Trucks are all automatic.
Knowing these numbers would be excellent. My truck purchase descision would be made MUCH easier!

I can only help on your scenario #1, 4.6L auto 4x4 Supercab, but with 1997 info, should be same for 1998.

With 3.55 axle GCWR is 11,500, max trailer is 6,600, GVWR is 6000.

With 3.08 axle (I would avoid 3.08!) GCWR is 10,000, max trailer is 5,100, GVWR is 6000.

Payload on the S/C 4x4 is only 1,365 minus people and opt. equipment. Choosing 4x4 drops towing by 400, and payload by 400 vs. the 4x2 ratings.

If you back off of 4x4 down to 4x2 to get the power, mileage, towing and payload back, you probably want the Limited Slip rear axle for slippery boat ramps.

I don't know of any site that lists the information you want. If people with newer trucks have a brochure, they could look it up.

I have a 97 with the 4.6 litre. I have a heavy duty ladder rack. In the bed and on the rack i carried 3500 pounds with no problem. With my rack and the 4x4 package I'm sitting at 7' 11". Going around corners was a little nerve racking but it done great. My Ford is amazing. At 278,000 she still gets down like James Brown.

Sounds problematic if you ask me.

That aside, that 8.8” rear doesn’t go under a F350 (a truck that actually can handle 3500# in it without a worry) for a reason. Give that underside a once over for surprise axle seal leaks or other surprises.
