Ignition control module

Does anyone know what would make the ignition module go bad? I just put a brand new one on the truck and nothing. Earlier the coil got so hot I could barely hold it. Could the coil do this? I have a 77 150 with I6.

Is this a stock coil ?

With the key in run ,is there 7-9 volts or 12V ?

Too much voltage will burn out a coil.

The IM are prone for heat related failure if there isn't draft space behind them to cool the circuitry.

Bad out of the box is also a possibility :)

It is a stock coil. I will have to check the voltage tomorrow. If there is 12v going to it what should I do? Would that be the voltage regulator? It might have been a bad one out of the box.

No that means there isn't any resistance in the resistance wire or someone has bypassed the R/W.

I will check the coil tomorrow before I start trying to figure out how to trouble shoot it. I will let you know, thx mil1ion!

I thought I had the same problem, and found it wasn't the IM, but the pick up in the distributor was bad.

I wonder if there is an hei for the 6 yet.... i've bought 3 different brands...no problems yet. two wires if you run a tach.....can't get ay easier than that. I've owned numerous 77-84 ford truck/bronco with duraspark and will change it out every time.

Well I got it running. I think the problem was the coil. I was looking at the 2 I had and one said for "use with electronic ignition" and the other didn't. I think what happened is they guy I bought it from never changed it out when he got rid of the points. That or he just bought the wrong one. Thanks for all the help!
