Water Pump on Flat 6
 

Quick Question:

I know this may sound like a silly question, but lately I'm hear'n a metalic sound from the front of the engine and I'm wondering if the water pump has bit the dust....did have an aftermarket temp. gauge....I put a thermastate (SP) in and it quit working I think... I know the engine is supposed to run alittle hot... just wondering if that's what it might be or is it something more serious.

I would agree and say it wouldn't be too serious worst case scenario replace water pump and flush the coolant system.

Well I ordered a water pump rebuild Kit and waited for it to come in before tear'n in the the water pump on my flat 6. I took it off and inspected the water pump and it looked Good and when rotated by hand was quite. So I'm think'n its a lifter or valve in the first cylinder now... one of these days I'll figure out how to put a little video up with sound..bet that would help. Thanks for the reply.

Nice to see a flat 6 runnin even if sickish, first one I've seen believe it or not.

Well sure you're curious to find out what me thinks.

I don't know if you have pointed the problem noise to the front part of the motor but My vote is on your clutch/flywheel assembly.

How you ask, I am going to say something is loose and when the motor is reved from a idle pressure builds and the "knock" stops.

My secound guess would be a lifter assembly but I do not think so the Knock sounds to loud that SERIOUS damage would be occuring to the valvetrain.

My 2 cents anywho

1950 226 Flathead Ford water pump
 

Hello, everyone.
Can anyone help me in knowing where to find a water pump for the 226 Flathead six motor ?? This is all new to me. I bought a 1950 226 Flathead six motor. and before I mounted it in my RatRod I wanted to know, if this motor would run. I took out the plugs and it turned over easy. I had great compression on the first 4 cylinders from front to back , but the back two cylinders had none. I took off the intake and the exhaust manifolds and then the side cover plates. and found that the back two cylinders had the exhaust valves stuck open. I took the head off. and found the head to have just been worked on , and the cylinders still had the honing marks in them, Everything was perfectly clean. I sprayed brake fluid and penatrating oil on the valve stems and after working the valve train over and over for about 5 minutes the valves were returning back down when they were suppose to. I was told this motor had very little mileage on this motor and It came out of a 50 mercury car. It sat around in a garage for 6 months. When I bought it the oil was still clean in the motor. I really feel this motor was very recently overhauled. It has a very nice Blue color but I am changing that to Red. The water pump as a small hole on the top side that it shows like it was leaking down the block. Its not the bearing slot hole. It looks like a casing flaw. So I need a good rebuilt water pump . If any one has one or knows where I can purchase one. Please write . and Thank you in advance. RatRoDave

FenCo out of winipeg Manitoba sold me one for a 239. I also have a parts catalogue from LMCtruck.com I would imagine could set you up with one. Also BOTP (blue oval truck parts) whom is a sponser of this website I am sure could also set you up with one.

I suggest BOTP because they sell a good product (also maybe this way I won't get in trouble for mentioning the competion)

Sounds good bout the motor, in my 1949 M47 truck the mtor was rebuilt in the Ford accretied plant in Winipeg Manitoba in 1965 then the truck was parked in 1967 (I do know this to be a fact) and somehow 40 years latr the motor was still mainly unseized and recently reved up for the first time by myself.

Once you do get your 226 goin I suggest burning a little 2 stroke oil lubricant in each tank of gas, todays gasoline is dry and your valve train will thank you.

Well thanks to my Travel agent I haven't had time to look into it...and I really want to have the parts on hand to fix it if it needs fix'n before I tear in to it. But when I get back from my visit to Fort Irwin I'll look into things....

7HA-8501 is the waterpump used on 226 engines for F Series trucks.

7HA-8591 is the waterpump repair kit for the above pump.

You might try joblotauto.com for the pump or kit.

Another source is Hemmings Motor News = hemmings.com.

Well I took it to a couple of wrench turners I work with and seem to think that the main bearings are bad soo I think I'll try and rebuild the lower half. And see if that fixes it.

I have a 300 6cyl that made a terrible metal sound and looking it was the waterpump pulley it only had three bolts and at idle it sounded something like your engine then at higher revs it balanced out and was quiet, something like what SNOWKING said, might be the ticket.
