02 Explorer 4 wheel drive problem

Yesterday I noticed when I pushed the 4x4 high and the 4x4 low button nothing happened, there was no light indicator coming on at the dash, and also there was no differece in gears when 4x4 low was selected, is there an easy fix to this like possible a fuse blown? Thanks for any input.

start with the fuses if that doesn't work i would check the wireing to make sure that it did not not come unplugged.

I checked the fuses which were good, next step is to check the wiring. I noticed when I turn the key on to acc and looked at the instrument panel I have the 4x4 low light on but no 4x4 high light don't know if the high bulb is burned out or has somthing to do with the problem that Im having.

i would get ahold of your local dealer or someone who has a computer to check for a code thats wrong in the system. even if the check engine light is not coming on.

Did a little research on this problem and it seems I may have a bad electronic shift control modual for the 4x4 system but can't be sure because I dont have the shop manual on testing the Modual, which cost about $290.00.

I have the exact problem as u (and I have the same vehcicle). Please let us know when you have the exact cause nailed down

Had that exact problem a couple of months ago. Had the transfer case elect. motor replaced. $547 bucks in my neck of the woods. Mine still don't work after it sets awhile. I disconnect the battery reset the computer and it starts working again. IMO Don't necessary mean it the motor. I try mine every couple of days, so far it works. I hope so, Bad weather is coming in a couple of days. I sure hope I don't have to pull out my 89 Trooper 4x4 with 200K miles on it just to get around in the snow and ice. I posted my problem this morning if you want to see the history of the exact same problem your having. Rc.

I read on another site were a guy had the exact same symptoms as me and it ended up being the 4x4 module. Its located behind the glove compartment, easy to swap out. cost is about 290.00 from ford.
Does anyone know where I can get it cheaper?
Seems like voltage spikes knock theses boards out, which I could of induced when I took my neg terminal off to clean.

Thanks copyman for the info, atleast now I will know where to look if mine starts up again. Rc

Copyman, find out anything? I priced the module at a dealership near me, quoted $185. dollars. Let us know if that was the the problem.

do you guys have the part number for the 4wd module?

Rc Moser 01-18-2007 05:53 PM

Far as I can figure P/n 1L5Z*7E453*AC Module - TRANSFER SHIFT CONTROL. I also had the Transfer case elect. motor replaced P/N 1L5Z*7G360* $308. Mine is a o2 sports trac 4x4.

I am having the same problem and will be replacing my module this weekend. I was quoted 185$ for the module as well.

You stated that the module is behind the glove box. Is this difficult to get to? Does the dash need to be removed or can it be accessed from the passanger footwell area?
