Change out engine coolent temp sensor 2.3I Ranger 1989

Looking for a good tip on changing out the ECTS on a 2.3I 1989 ranger. I seem from the shop manual it's above oil filter near back on block and below the intake manifold. I can't see nor feel it. Do I have to remove the in-take to get at it??

Two tpyes:

The sender is the one on the back of the engine. I changed one. It is a pain to put back in and you need a load of extensions....all the way to the brake master cylinder. A lot of stuff is in the way on my 94 2.3L. It is under the oil pressure unit. To be sure you got the right one, just check the temp gauge when you've pulled a connector off. The temp gauge will be dead if you got the right one.

The sensor is on front in one of the heater hose lines on the passenger side. Only replace if you have a ECT check engine code and the wiring is in good shape and the sensor is connected. This goes to the computer.

You will be literally under the hood (bowing on the engine to reach the sender. It's okay, but I could not save the coolant from pouring out, but my stepdad and I filtered the pan full that we collected and put it back in.

Good luck.

ECT sensor

I'm trying to replace one on a '91, 2.3L, and I'm having a heckuva time locating it.

I've found it, but how in the world do you get to it? I'm guessing you have to go up from underneath.

Thanks for the help

I got the ECTS out, but had to remove the oil filter from under to get to it. Thanks for the help.

Andrew :)
