360, 390, or 428?

I have three motors. I plan to put one of them in my truck. I have a 360, 390 high proformance and a 428 maruader. Which does everyone think I should go with? I want something that can put on the odd smoke show here and there. Does anyone know the valve sizes for a stock 428 marauder? I would like to have the truck run on regular gas. Should I just take the heads and intake off the 390 and beef up the 360? I'm not expecting much milage wise but regular gas would save money.
Thanks
Rick

If they are are all in good shape, probably the 390. Put the timing at 6 degrees and go light on the throttle and you can squeek by on regular most of the time.

I say that because despite what I've learned here about 360s, (that they are just short stroke 390s) I still hate them because everyone I knew when they came out hated them.

And the 428 would be worth enough to run your truck for a year or two.....

360, 390 or 428?

The 360 has 130 00 miles, 390 has a lilttle over 100 000 and the 428 only has 60 000 miles. The 390 hi po has about 400 hp but the 428 has 350 and thats stock. The 428 is only missing the valves, other then that it looks good. The 428 was torn down right after it was pulled 20 years ago. The heads have minor rust on them, everything else looks good. Is it worth the money to clean up the heads and buy new valves? How would I tell what size of valves I need? I'll try to get the casting numbers later tonight.
Thanks
Rick

Thanks the casting numbers from the heads will help tell if they are std or CJ heads. Does the back of the 428 block have a sandscratch " A or C " ? G.

Numbers

The casting number on the head is C8AE-H. There is another number in the retainers for the springs, 9Fll. Hope this helps to figure out the valve sizes and I will try to get the block numbers tomorrow.
Thanks
Rick

Yep the C8AE-H heads are the standard 360/390/428 heads with 2.02 intake and 1.55 exaust valves. The CJ heads had a little bigger valve and a few more cc's in the head chamber. 9F11 is the date code of 69/June/11th. When you look at the block check the crank saddle area and look for double or triple webbing. The "A" 428 blocks normally have the double and the "C" CJ 428 block the triple. Also inside the center freeze plug look for the 428 cast inside and double check the 4.13 cyl bore. If it's a production 428 it will have either the A or C on the back. If it has no casting numbers at all and some vertical ribs on the outside of the block it could be a service block. G.

360, 390 or 428

I know the whole motor is stock so I'm almost positive that it won't be a CJ. If the heads are standard 360, 390, and 428 can I take the heads off my 360 and put them on the 428 block.

FFR428 12-29-2004 04:52 PM

Sure the 360 heads will work. Just keep in mind cam lift and spring pressures when your building. G.

Gregorri 12-29-2004 05:34 PM

Hey, thats probably what I will do just because of the money factor. I dont know much about motors, what do you mean when you say cam lift and spring pressure? Its not a bolt on kind of a swap? If that was the case can I take the valves out of the 360 and put them in the 428 heads?I'm new to all this stuff but thats the reason why I bought my truck. Anything goes wrong I should be able to fix it.
Thanks
Rick
