my horn doesn't work
my horn does not work. what do i need to do, any suggestions first time working on vehicles, but i do have some knowledge, just not on horns-thanx

the first thing to do would be to check and make sure that the horn is conected and if so see if there is power to it when the horn button is pressed. if not work your way back to the horn button to find where power is being lost. if there is power there u need a new horn.

I've made the assumption that you checked the fuses but if not do that first, next:
1. Find the horn under the hood and check that the bolt holding it to the rad support isn't all rusted up. This is your ground, if rusted remove and scuff up the horn bracket with sandpaper, clean the bolt and re-install 2. Check the wire (connector) that is attached to the horn is not all corroded and full of green death. I think it should be a yellow/green wire if memory serves me right. Try the horn If still no good, check the horn pad on steering wheel 3. Horn pad can be removed with 2 screws that are fastened behind steering wheel itself. Horn pad plastic is notorious for breaking. You'll know yours is shot if it feels real flimsy wheel you pull the pad out of the steering wheel. If not broken check that the wires are in good condition. 4. If none of these you have a wiring issue. Depending on what yuo have planned for your truck you have 2 choices. Spend the time to find the loom problem and keep it original or run a wire to a push button switch placed somewhere convenient in the cab the is connected to the horn on the other end. Good luck |

truckfarmingcanuck-i would bet that is what is wrong "a busted horn pad" i was thinking about putting in a button switch anyway this might save me the trouble- i see you are from canada there's a guy that lives near us that is from canada do you know any dechesneau's

Lost ground, No Horn
I am a new member and this is my first post. I have been helped by other members posts on ignition and maybe I can help with the horn problem. If the rubber universal has been replaced in the steering column make sure the ground was reconnected around the rubber universal. I ran a ground strap from the bolt on one side of the universal to the nut on the other side and the horn started working great. I am not sure how the ground was run originally but I am not going for show.

WJM There's a lot in that post & don't want to crowd this one.. would you please take a look/see -- ceekay1 Also have a '77 four star 460+4bbl, auto,. eletronic after market ignition - california raised coach,. its a sparkler.. horn does not wrok and have switch on that one,. and have another post to find wiring colors or anything to help so I can hook the cruise control back up... TY! |

wiring diagram for 76-78 shows it on radiator support? Should have a yellow wire going to starter relay, and a yel/blu wire going to the horn switch, if im reading this diagram right. These could be crap diagrams too, will someone correct me if im wrong here?

The horn relay for a cruise control option truck is located under the instrument panel to the left of the steering column. That is for a 79 model, not sure on the 78 and earlier but I would imagine they are the same.
If the relay does not work go out and buy one of them AAAUUUUGAAA horn's!! |
