How to read the tag on a Ford 8.8" Rear
I have a 1995 Ford F-150 4x4 XLT, and I am looking into purchasing a posi for my rear, but I need to know the spline count before i an order. How to I figure this out. This is what my tag on the rear says
S832J 3 31 88 5C13 I assume that the 88 means 8.8" rear, does the 31 mean 31 spline? or is the 31 linked with the other 3 to the left of it meaning that i have 3.31 gears? That is what i originally thought it meant, but since the first 3 is spaced so far away from the 31, I am thinking that maybe they arent connected and that the 31 means 31 spline, can someone help? |

i'd say so -- when i talked to Ford Parts about this (was looking into getting a different ratio) i was told 4x4 trucks use 31 spline...
28 is probably for cars?? -nt |

The 3 31 means you have a 3.31 gear in that rear end. The space is for a L, which would make it a limited slip rear end. My rearend has a 3L55 which is a limited slip 3.55, but my friends is just a 3 55.
The trucks have a 31 spline axle, cars use the 28 spline. |
