Wet Spark Plug?

I had a misfire on cylinder 4 and I checked my coil an the boot was wet. Then I took my spark plug out and it smelled like coolant. It was soaked. What does that mean?

Often it means a leaking head gasket---have you yet done a cooling system leak down check?

Hope its not that serious though----tough luck if so.

Oil

Thanks for the reply. But I also checked another spark plug and it had oil on it. So I'm guessing you're right about the head gasket leak. My oil cap had white milky stuff on it but my dip stick looked fine.

I found water in the 1 and 5 cylinders on my wife's Mountaineer with a 4.6 3v. I had to replace both plugs because the corrosion was causing misfires. I wasn't sure if it got there from driving in the rain or if the head or intake gasket were leaking. We drove it for a road trip this weekend and it used some water, so looks like I'll be trying to track down a leak.

That's somewhat normal for those of us living in a 4 season climate. Humidity condenses on the cap and not enough heat during driving to drive it away. Since the dip stick looks good that's somewhat encouraging.

Is the coolant reservoir also clean, without any oily residue?

check the intake manifold for a leak
