Turbo. Replace or rebuild

Well, when it rains it pours I guess. It seems like the metals that were in my last OA where from the turbo bearing going. I got the dreaded squeal today. So, do I rebuild or replace? After my HPOP fiasco, money is tight, but I don't want to attempt to rebuild it and having never done it, screw something up. I see quite a few on Ebay for $400 or less, so I'm torn.
Opinions???

IMO rebuild it, or pay a shop to do it if you're not capable. I wouldn't risk a sight-unseen turbo off fleabay, God only knows what you'd get.

Should I rebuild mine if it isn't doing anything bad yet? I have everything in front of it off. It has about 190k mi on it. I am tempted to go ahead and rebuild while I am there.

now this is a timly thread for sure.

I hear, or suppose i hear, a very high pitch squeal when driving my 2003 SD with 168K miles. I can hear the turbo under acceleration, which is stock FAIK (far as i know) but i also hear what sounds like a high pitch noise as well.

I was wonder at what miles do turbo usually need to be rebuilt.

Now i do know some of the history. The original owner did pull a 25ft dual axle boat at times and he had the truck from 50K to 108K. The second owner pulled a smaller boat and his son pulled a landscape trailer at times but not every day and the trailer was only some 3-4K more or less.

The 2nd owner got at 108 and sold to me at 168K miles.. No tunes, mods etc at all.

SO what is a good mileage number to use for turbo rebuild. I was going to do a full rebuild including the EBPV mods as i want to get a tuner that will use that for exhaust brake function.

the 360 bearing, a new WW, not ww2, all the orings etc.

Side to side play is fine as long as it's not hitting the housing. In and out play is BAD and it needs to be rebuilt.

Ryan, I rebuilt mine with only 120000 miles when I did my uppipes just because I was there. It's cheap and easy for piece of mind.

I rebuilt mine when it was just shy of 300k. I did the ww2 and a better wastegate controller. I had a few hiccups during the job, but i couldnt be more pleased with the results. In hindsight, the only thing i would do different is the 360 bearing. Read about it here.

I was looking online and saw a new turbo for 7.3L on ebay. In looking at the pictures i see two valves on the exhaust side turbine.

There is a valve on the top or side with split pipe side which i believe sits on the top of the "up pipes" that has the large diaphragm type valve with rod attached to intake side on top , what is that valve for. ??

also i see another valve on the bottom of the turbo and not sure what controls that valve and what is its function.

sorry to sound so confused but i am to a point on turbos it seems.

Sounds like you're seeing the waste gate for the one at the top. On the bottom most likely is the exhaust back pressure valve... It's also been awhile since I've looked at one too.
