engine Identity codes
I picked up a 63 F250 last week. the guy said it had an 87 Carbed V8 in it but didnt know where it came from or what size it was. where in the engine codes on the late 80s model V8s so I can figure this out.

I know how to decode it just not sure where to look for the numbers. Where did ford stamp the block/head on late 80s V8s

The block casting numbers are down on the side around where the starter mounts and the heads are on the bottom of one of the central intake ports so you can't see them unless the intake is off. And that's the good news unfortunately, casting numbers will only tell you the relative vintage of the parts it won't tell you what vehicle it came from, and there are no numbers that will tell you that but all is not lost as there really wasn't much difference between a car or truck engine from that era so the exact vehicle doesn't matter. As for exactly what engine you have that will have to be visually verified, it's most likely you have something from the Windsor family, if you can confirm that by the the shape and size of the valve covers and the location of the theremostat in the intake not the block, then figuring if it's a 302 or 351 just comes down to the width of the intake, about 6" is a 302 and somewhere around 9" is a 351.

post a picture of the engine. that alone is usually enough for us to id it.

Can't see the casting #'s… looks like a 460 to me.
The intake # will help… pull the air cleaner off and report back. That sticker on the valve cover should also tell you... |
Krooser I think you are correct on the 460 I looked on the sticker and couldnt find anything at first but right there at the bottom in small print it says 7.5L so i believe it is indeed the big boy.

These 3rd digits look like they came from the awful red book, a POS foisted on mankind...that claimed to decode casting & part number prefixes.

like I said i dont give a hoot what vehicle it came out of honestly I just wanna know what it is which I do its a 460 from a late 80s Ford whogivesacrap and now I can get parts for it if it ever dies.....Thank you FTE
