Service engine light being tripped by EGT?

Hey fellas, I got a question that hopefully someone will have the answer to.

What temperature does EGT have to reach before the service engine soon light comes on?

When were driving in the mountains, climbing at high power/ high boost conditions will trip the light after a few seconds. It goes back off after we top the hill and let off. So I figure it must be an EGT triggered situation.

The truck is E99, tuned with a DiabloSport predator tuner. Stock turbo, injectors.

We've been running it this way for years and never has anything blown up or melted. A couple times we've even had the turbo start glowing cherry red when were towing really hard.

You can melt your engine block into a puddle before the SES light will come on for EGT. There's no EGT sensor in the truck from the factory so there's nothing for the computer to read and cause it to trip a light.

Usually it's a P1211 that sets the light in those conditions, which is common for a chipped or tuned truck. The light goes off after a few minutes, no harm, no foul.

You can look at upgrading the HPOP if it really bothers you, but I'd recommend at least pulling the code first.

A pyrometer might be a good investment.

Ok cool. I knew it wasn't really something to worry about cuz it still runs great after all these years.

As far as a pyrometer, ehh... if we had one we probably wouldn't push as hard. Haha

You should be able to pull DTC's with the Predator; I don't remember if it shows stored codes, but I,ve seen the P1211 when I would get heavy-footed......and the Predator will also clear DTC's

My bet is you are getting the "ICP is lower/high than desired" code. I got that one a few times when dragging the camper over the mountains.

Yep, just like the 2 previous posts said...P1211 code most likely tripping the SES light. HPOP not being able to keep up with the Demand from the program. I had the predator before and you can pull & clear codes like said above. I remember EGT's being fine in the tow programs but she will get very hot (+1250 EGT's) in the higher HP tunes .

Over boost will also set an ses light that will go out a minute after it's set. Don't remember what code it is though.

Were just running the 65hp econo tune. Boost will peak out around 24 IIRC.

Will there be a code stored even though the light isn't staying on?

I believe there is, but I no longer have my Predator. IIRC, it will show stored codes and tell you it is "Not Ready"...all that means is you need to drive it before it erases the code from memory....this info, and 4%.00, will get you a cup of coffee @ Starbucks!!:)

Just for future reference the PCM in the 7.3l years does not monitor EGT's. You have to add a Pyrometer gauge to see the EGT's. 24psi of boost sounds normal for a 60ish hp tune. You have the tools with the Predator to read DTC's. If the code is still stored in th PCM it will show it. Let us know what it is and we can help diagnose the possible issue.

Like your A10 picture. Dr. Gatling would have been proud of it's GE Avenger 30mm Cannon! Do you remember seeing them in Desert Storm in the 90's firing on the Iraqi's leaving Kuwait on the Iraqi Highway? It took two years to clear all the vehicles they fired on.

10 tons of pure American Freedom!

I'm not too worried about it. I'd have to find the tuner to read the codes. And I don't remember where it's at haha. Thanks for the info guys.
