Steel wheels hub caps and beauty rings

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:DocumentProperties> <o:Version>12.00</o:Version> </o:DocumentProperties> </xml><![endif]--> Afternoon all, so my 55 f100 badly needs new tires, and before I purchase those, I want to have a tire/wheel plan that I can live with for a while.

I like the way it sits on the tire/wheel combination it has now, but I cannot stand the hubcaps on the truck. They are center caps from a much later ford truck, and just look wrong. My dad (former owner) believes he got the wheels (in the 70’s) from a late 60’s early 70’s ford. They are 15”, not sure about the width, and the center caps wrap around the center of the wheel (rather than insert into).

Honestly, I don’t much care that the wheels are not original, but the look I want is a nicely painted/powder coated steel wheel with a center cover that looks like it could have been used in the 50’s (if not something that looks original.. though I prefer chrome to painted), and maybe some beauty rings to finish off.

That was a very long intro to my question…. I’ve been able to find a source for “baby moons” that should fit the later model ford wheels, but any other center cap I’ve found (and like), are made to insert into, rather than wrap round, the wheel center. Is there a source for more “vintage” looking center caps that will fit on these older model wheels, or do I just need to look for some different wheels?

Appreciation and respect to anyone that read all of that.

Hey there, can you post a picture of what you are looking to put on your truck?

I think I can help you out on this, and can surely get you best price on baby moons and trim rings...

truckeemtnfords 07-16-2014 03:30 PM

You need to provide a picture of what you have as there are so many variables. I can't speak for all but most of us here would just be guessing without seeing what you have.

The two hubcap mounting styles do have their unique looks. You'll need to decide what you want your truck to look like. If you want smaller caps, you'll have to change wheels, there's no way around that. If you are ok with the larger caps, Ford started to use that size on cars in 1949, so there's a lot of 50's style caps that could work as an alternative to the baby moons (which would be my choice, fwiw). A google search will bring up tons of images.

Thanks. Truck is in transit from ca to tx. I will see if I have pictures that give enough focus on the wheel, and get those posted. If I don't, I'll get some up, when I see the truck late next week.

A while back someone was making a early looking cap that fits on the later wheels with the knubs on the outside of center. I am sure they had the late 40's F1 style caps. Let me see if I can find out who that is, if they are still around. From the problem some seem to be having with the early style repo caps staying on, it might be a better way.

Hey there. On my 52 I have 8 lug wheels. I sourced chrome hub covers over a painted wheel with trim rings. I get many comments specifically on the wheel treatment. I also had FORD script vinyl lettering made for each of the hub covers. I'll try to post a pic.

Best picture I have at the moment, and first time I've tried to post a pic. Hope it works:

Okiedokie, if you can track that down, it would be awesome. Thanks!

Well I did a little searching and see that I made a similar post on here in 2009. I could not recall the company then, so not much chance now. Being old is tough on the timeline of life, lol.

No worries. Thanks!

In my experience, the options are pretty limited for the "later" model wheels you probably have. The inside diameter of the hub cap needs to be about 10 1/4". I've been using Mr. Gasket baby moons for 4-5 years on my '65 with, I believe, the same wheels you have. They didn't fit right and I had to use a Dremel to make some room. They have stayed on pretty well ever since.

If you find any older looking hub caps that work, please let us know!

The only factory hub cap that I really like for these wheels, which I just bought, came on some '65 and '66 F100's and 1964 galaxies, customs, and 500's. There are some out there that are 9 1/2" so you gotta make sure they are 10 1/4".

Seeing your wheels I would also think that a smooth baby moon style would look the best, but that is just my opinion. Depending on what your plans are you might just go with what you got until you decide if you want to keep those wheels or not.

I'm running the later (outie) F-100 wheels and these hubcaps for a '53 Ford Car. I've thought of adding trim rings but every time I pick one up, it appears they are stamped out of aluminum foil.

Wayne Waldrep 07-17-2014 04:46 PM

I have the outies on mine and found what i needed at hubcapmike.com. I got both trim rings and the hubcaps in stainless steel (had to call and get the caps as they werent listed on the site as stainless at the time). I've had good luck with mine.

The BM we have are 10 1/8" ID-$20 a set. Stainless steel trim rings are $30 a set. We produce these and I can get them to you fellers at a discount

I had the same isue when I bought my truck. it came with 70s wheels and hub caps. I wanted to keep with the old truck look, so I bought new OEM style wheels that would accomidate the OEM inny hub caps. I bought new wheels, hub caps, and rings when I bought new tires.

I think I can help you out on this, and can surely get you best price on baby moons and trim rings...

Thanks, again. Finally have the truck in TX. I'll paste link to pic below. The wheel has 4 "outie" nubs, and the old hub caps I'm replacing measure almost 10 1/4" on the inside (more like 10 3/16").

Is there a website, where I can the products you sell?

Thanks, FP. Can I just say I love your collection. Ford Trucks and VW are near to my heart. Drooling over your 56 VW.

johnson.jeff.a 07-27-2014 08:19 AM

Wayne, Thanks for the pics. Very helpful. Your truck is beautiful. Like your wheel setup alot.

Thanks ALBUQ F-1. Do you happen to remember where you picked those hub caps up?

This thread has brought out some options I never realized were available, which is awesome! I like the ones above and I also found these that look pretty cool!

Here is my '65 with the outie wheels and the hubcaps I added recently.

Mainly I just like that I don't have to worry about them flying off since they fit perfectly! I am going to try to polish up the stainless a little more.

eBay, but from a local guy, so I could see them first. As it turned out, I got 5 caps for $70, 3 stainless and 2 chrome.

No kidding. That options led me to this (that I've sort of fallen in love with):

That's a bit pricey though. If I can't find cheaper, I'll probably just have to do baby moons with beauty rings for now... Maybe I can come back to this.

1973/79 truck parts catalog pic: TYPE 10 = D7TZ-1130-A .. 15" "Outie" Hubcap = 1977/89 F100/150 & E100/150.

Outie = So called because the hubcap snaps over tabs located on the outside of the wheels center section.

Innie = So called because the hubcap snaps over tabs located on the inside of the wheels center section.

F1's, 1953/64 F100's have innie hub caps, 1965/66 F100 could have innie or outie hub caps (see post 26 for pic of '65/66 outies, same as 1964 Custom/Galaxie/Galaxie 500 - C4AZ-1130-A).

Bill, do you have a photo like this that shows the innie caps? Would be very helpful, thanks.

These are the only 1948/56 truck parts catalog pics that show the innie hubcap for F1/F100.

6A-1130-A (replaced 6A-1130) .. Innie Hubcap-Stainless Steel with Blue FORD letters / Reproduced

Late 1947 and 1948 Ford Passenger Cars - 1948/52 F1 - 1953/56 F100.

This cap was the "service part replacement" for the original 1953/56 F100 cap that was painted argent with red FORD letters. AFAIK, not repro'd.

Lot of choices. There seems to be quite a few looking like mine.http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps28c62e22.jpg

Joe

Joe,
Tied to PM, but looks like you're out of space....

Joe,
If the offer is still available, I think I'd like to order the baby moons / beauty rings that we exchanged messages about earlier this summer.

Is it possible to get pics of the baby moons and beauty rings available?

15" ford steel wheels from late 60's f100, with the 10 1/4" outie nubs (4 nubs).

The wheels are not very deep so the beauty rings will probably be the shallowest that you have.

Here is the wheel (before I had it blasted and painted)

Thanks,
jj

Great. Such a good price was worth a little gamble. Thanks for making the decision even easier!

Just go through any old ford car dealer (macs, dennis carpenter....), the outer bumps will fit any ford car from 1949 and up and trucks from 1957 (?) and up. I bought some repo '51 ford car caps for my '55 panel.

I have some of these caps if I want to change, but they don't repo these two yet.
