330 engine id

I have read until my brain hurts!
I am looking to replace a tired worn out 390 with this engine, it is going in a 68 F500 both engines have the front mount on the timing cover and rear mounts on bell housing.
some questions on this engine,
what 330 is it?
will the timing cover from the 390 fit this engine? I want a more common water pump and need to install external stuff that won't mount to the 330 timing cover.
will the oil filter housings change so I can run a spin on filter?
will distributors change to get rid of the governor and possibly run electronic ignition?

you sure it was a 390 and not a 391 post a pic

330s came in two flavors. HD or MD.

HD has the large diameter crank nose. (1 3/4", forged steel.)

MD has the small diameter, the same diameter as FE engines. (1 3/8" usually cast)

A '68 F500 probably would not have had a 391FT. If it has a car or pickup 390 in it, it was a transplant. That said, the front and bell mounts are FT items only.

No spin-on oil filter? Points to HD motor, see here on spin-on adapter, post 22:

If you have a car or PU 390 with an FT cover on it, it has a bushing in it to make up the difference in crank diameter. Since your 330 is probably an HD, you are probably stuck with the FT cover etc.

Those parts should not be impossible to find.

old engine was a 390, bought long block about 8 years ago, put over 100,000 miles on it. it got real tired and than lost 1 cylinder. the engine before it was a 390 out of a station wagon (used didn't last too long), before that was a 352. might have been original but I doubt it.

this truck was an Oklahoma state highway truck first, than sold and re painted than sold again and re painted than sold again and than my Father bought it. kinda been rode hard and put away wet it's whole life.

the transplant engine is the tag I posted that engine and trans is out of a '70 F600

pulled covers and they are not interchangeable. so I assume it is a HD
the oil filter housing off of the 390 fits, is there any reason not to use it?
if this 330 is too much of a dog I will most likely have the 390 rebuilt again but don't want to as the truck isn't being used as much as it was before.
another option is to see what it would take to make the 460 in my '89 F250 fit.

No reason not to swap the oil filter set up.

according to my Chiltons manual 68-ish 330 has 190 hp @4000 rpm 306 tq @ 2000 rpm 7.4 to 1 compression that is roughly 25 hp less than a 360 of the same year and 21 ft lbs of tq difference so yes it will be a little doggy but they are pretty much idiot proof and can handle anything you throw at them short of sustained high rpm's..... yes you can use the FE's oil filter housing with no problems.....the FE and FT family are close but many things will not change you kind of need to know what can fit on what like you cannot use and FT intake on FE heads or vice versa and you cannot use an FE dizzy on an FT or a FT on an FE since they have different size oil pump drive shafts.... but you can completely replace the FT heads and intake with FE heads and intake and really bring the inner beast out in them since the FT heads are restricted down to make them durable and idiot proof.... one of the biggest give away's on the difference between an FE and an FT is the water pump, if it is held on with only 4 bolts to the block itself its an FE where as a FT looks more like a 460 water pump how it bolts directly to the timing cover....... this is my 391 industrial i had installed in my 66 f100 a few years back http://www.uscconlinealbum.com/lifec...?th=450&tw=610 http://www.uscconlinealbum.com/lifec...?th=450&tw=610 difference in FE and FT oil pump drive rods http://www.uscconlinealbum.com/lifec...?th=450&tw=610 difference between FE and FT intakes http://www.uscconlinealbum.com/lifec...?th=450&tw=610

ok on to the next problem, I need a 3rd pulley on the harmonic balancer!!!!!!
the 390 had a 3rd but it is made to the other 2 and just bolts on. the 330 has 2 made on the harmonic and has the 3 threaded holes in the center where one could be maunted. but I can't find one.
anyone know where to look or have one laying around that you would sell?
