Tranny problem HELP!!!

Today I took off from a stop sign and the yoke going into the rear end broke. My driveshaft then fell out and was spinning and flopping around under the truck so I put it in neutral and it continued to spin in gear. shouldn't the tranny go into neutral even with the driveshaft unhooked from the rear end. :-arrgh

Sorry I forgot to mention it is a 2001 F250 7.3l and it does have a shift kit from the previous owner but I am not sure what one is in it.

Without the load imposed by coupling of the driveshaft to the differential, the output can still rotate. Placing it in Park would be the only way to mechanically stop it.

Mueckster,

I was kind of thinking the same thing just wasn't sure. I tried to shift into park and it was grinding the gears so I just left it and shut the truck off.

Grinding was likely because of what Muekster said. Same effect as trying to go into park while the truck is moving. Assuming nothing got damaged, it probably shifted into park when you shut the motor off.
